Andaman vs Maldives · the international-holiday decision

Andaman vs Maldives: an honest comparison

We run Andaman trips, so you would expect us to talk you into one. We would rather you picked right. So here is the plain version: Maldives wins on pure luxury and seclusion — if what you want is an overwater villa and nothing else, book Maldives. Andaman wins on cost, variety and ease for Indian travellers, and it is the better family and first-timer trip. Below is the same comparison we would give you on the phone, factor by factor.

Who each one is actually for

Choose Maldives if

  • You want an overwater villa and nothing else — that is the one thing Andaman cannot give you.
  • It is a two-person trip built around privacy, and budget is not the deciding factor.
  • You would rather stay put on one resort island than move around.

Choose Andaman if

  • You are travelling on an Indian passport and would rather skip visas, forex and an international flight.
  • You want more than beaches — history, jungle, scuba and a few different islands in one trip.
  • You are bringing family or it is a first island holiday, and you want the budget to stretch further.

The cost gap, stated plainly

The same five days costs far less in Andaman — most of the difference is accommodation. Maldives is built around one high-end resort per island, and you are often paying for the villa and the isolation as much as the beach. Andaman gives you the full range, from a beach hut to a premium resort, plus a domestic flight instead of an international one. For Indian travellers there is no visa, no forex and no passport, which quietly saves money and hassle before the trip even starts. What Andaman does not have is the overwater villa — if that specific image is the whole point of the holiday, the price gap will not change your mind, and it should not.

Where Andaman pulls ahead: variety

Maldives is a single kind of holiday done very well — sea, sun and spa, mostly inside your resort. Andaman is several holidays in one trip: calm beaches on Havelock and Neil, world-class scuba and snorkelling, the history of the Cellular Jail, mangrove kayaking and a few different islands to move between. That variety is why it works so well for families and mixed groups, where not everyone wants to do the same thing all week. If you want to switch off completely and never make a plan, that same variety is the reason some travellers prefer Maldives — and that is a fair call.

The questions people actually ask

Is Andaman cheaper than Maldives?

Yes, clearly. A 5-day Andaman trip for a couple runs around ₹30,000 – ₹80,000 with flights, hotels and ferries in — the same span in Maldives is closer to ₹1.5 – ₹5 lakh. Most of the gap is accommodation: Maldives is built around one high-end resort per island, while Andaman gives you everything from beach huts to premium stays.

Which is better for a honeymoon?

It depends on what the two of you want. If the picture in your head is an overwater villa and total seclusion, Maldives does that better and we will say so plainly. If you want a mix of quiet beaches, a couple of dives, a bit of history and dinner options beyond a resort menu — for a fraction of the cost — Andaman is the stronger honeymoon. Havelock and Neil are calm and unhurried without being cut off.

Which is better for a family?

Andaman, for most families. There is more to do across ages — beaches, the Cellular Jail, scuba and snorkelling, island ferries — food is familiar and easy for vegetarian and Jain diets, and it costs far less for four people than a Maldives resort. Maldives suits families too, but the price and the one-island setup make it a narrower fit.

Do I need a passport for Andaman?

No. The Andaman Islands are part of India, so Indian citizens travel on a domestic flight with a normal government ID — no passport, no visa, no permit for the main islands, and no foreign exchange. Maldives, being another country, needs a passport and visa on arrival. Foreign nationals visiting Andaman do need their passport and a permit (RAP), which is issued on arrival.

Is Andaman as beautiful as Maldives?

The beaches and clear water hold their own — Radhanagar, Kalapathar and Neil are genuinely striking. Where Maldives pulls ahead is the manicured, postcard-perfect resort setting: everything is polished for the photograph. Andaman is more natural and a little rougher at the edges, with real towns and jetties around the beauty. Neither is "better" — they are a different kind of beautiful.

Which should I pick if I only have a few days?

For a short, purely restful two-person break where you never want to leave the resort, Maldives packs in fast. For a first island trip, a family, or anyone who wants variety and value, Andaman rewards 5 – 7 days — enough to cover Port Blair, Havelock and Neil without rushing. Tell us your dates and who is travelling, and we will tell you honestly which one fits.

How this page stays true

Written by the Tropical Andamans editorial team, as of July 2026. We operate Andaman trips only, so we have said openly where Maldives is the better choice — that is the honest version, not a sales pitch. Our Andaman cost ranges come from our own quoting records; the Maldives figure is a market estimate we do not stand to earn from. Every photo here was shot by our team in the Andamans — we show no Maldives imagery because we have none we took ourselves.

Still deciding?

Tell us your dates, budget and who is travelling. We will tell you honestly which one fits — and if that is Maldives, we will say so. If it is Andaman, we will plan it.
